Though there is over 180km of sidewalks in Chilliwack, over 440km (70%) of roadways in Chilliwack do not have any sidewalks. With the city’s rapid growth, it is time to embark on its first Active Transportation Plan. This plan will focus on determining where future pedestrian funding should be spent that best reflects where the community is now and where it will be. Your feedback will be helpful in understanding what is important to residents, how you currently get around town, and how you want to get around town.
The City completed a Cycle Vision plan in 2017 that identifies where Chilliwack should prioritize future cycling infrastructure. It can be found on the City’s Roads and Transportation section of the Chilliwack.com website. The Active Transportation Plan will instead focus on all other components of Active Transportation: walking, wheelchairs and assisted mobility, scooters, skateboards, and other forms of micro mobility.
Things to know:
- Sidewalk improvements are funded several ways in Chilliwack. The main forms of funding are:
- through development frontage improvements (e.g. two lot splits, townhouse, or apartment developments),
- development cost charges (e.g. Promontory and Vedder sidewalks and widening funded through monies collected from developers),
- capital funding mainly from property taxes (e.g. school walking route improvements or important missing links),
- grant funding (Provincial and Federal)
Thank you for participating in the Active Transportation Survey.
